The Freelancer Resume Writing Guide - Jobscan Blog

The Freelancer Resume Writing Guide - Jobscan Blog Posted on March 22, 2017August 10, 2018 by Paige Doepke In case you're a consultant, similar to me, you realize it has significant advantages. Telecommuting, making your own hours and picking your own customers, to give some examples. You additionally realize it has significant emphasize focuses. One of the greatest emphasize focuses is continually searching for new customers to keep your business developing. As consultants, we're basically both utilized and jobless continually. Thus, similar to any (semi)unemployed individual, you need an exceptional resume. My blessing to you, the fearless spirits who have actually made a profession out of employment looking, is The Freelancer's Resume Writing Guide. What is distinctive about a specialist continue? The simplest method to address this inquiry is to think about the reason for an all day work continue versus an independent resume. The reason for an all day work continue is to persuade the business that you have the right stuff they are searching for, and that you additionally can possibly develop with their organization and fit into the shape long haul. Most employing administrators are glad to prepare somebody who has energy and will fit well with the organization culture, regardless of whether their experience is somewhat feeble. A full time representative is a drawn out speculation. The motivation behind an independent resume is to sell the likely customer on what you as of now can do. Much of the time, they needn't bother with you to develop with their organization, they simply need you to take care of business rapidly and proficiently. What's more, since you're being paid continuously, preparing will be kept to the absolute minimum. While one resume centers around what you plan to do and how you need to enhance the experience you have, the different spotlights on what you will do on the grounds that you've just done the specific errands previously. Shouldn't something be said about a configuration? There are three kinds of resume groups. Ordered, useful and half breed. While most employment searchers will pick an ordered resume design, most consultants will profit by to a greater extent a practical configuration. A practical resume puts your capabilities and aptitudes up front instead of concentrating on understanding and training. Step by step instructions to arrangement an independent resume Contact data and portfolio interface Regardless of what sort of work you do, consistently incorporate your complete name, email address, telephone number and postage information (counting postal district). Contact information is significant for expected customers to get a grip of you, and for candidate following frameworks if applying through a structure. Consultants ought to likewise ALWAYS incorporate a connect to their portfolio. In the event that you don't have one, you need one. A consultant's best resources are their examples, and a resume can't grandstand those examples. Capabilities This segment is the principle focal point of the independent resume. It's your opportunity to get out explicit activities you've taken a shot at. You can isolate it into different segments if need be. For instance, Content Marketing, SEO and Social Media Management. Each undertaking referenced should just utilize a solitary visual cue. Keep them short! Aptitudes Rundown any aptitudes that vary from your conspicuous range of abilities. For instance, on the off chance that you are an independent visual originator, yet you have experience coding, that is a great aptitude to make reference to here. This is likewise the ideal area to list catchphrases for ATS. Proficient Experience On the off chance that you have any significant all day business history or long haul independent/provisional labor, list those here as you would on a customary resume. Incorporate your activity title, dates of business, and a couple clear visual cues. Instruction This segment should possibly be incorporated in the event that you have significant advanced education (school or above). In the event that you don't, don't perspire it. As far as I can tell, your abilities and experience as a specialist are significantly more important to customers than training. One final tip: paying little heed to your specialty, you ought to consistently redo your resume for each and every activity. Each independent activity you apply for will request explicit capabilities. You have the ability to redo your capabilities to coordinate precisely what the customer is searching for. Redo and utilize this guide, and I ensure you'll begin getting progressively, greater independent employments! How We Got Funded By 500 Startups On A Cab Ride To The Airport

How we received funded by 500 Startups on a cab experience to the airport â€" Kevin David, co-founder, Sonder Getting seen by 500 Startups was tougher before that they had an utility process. In 2012 without an software course of, you wanted to be really helpful by people throughout the 500 network (firm founders or mentors). They do have an application course of now. My co-founder Ramakanth Dorai and I have been 23 yr old current school grads from India who started Walletkit and didn’t know anybody from the 500 network. But that is how we hustled our way in. On Aug 24(2012), I saw a tweet by Paul Singh from Mumbai Airport. His subsequent tweets revealed that he can be in a few Indian cities assembly entrepreneurs and meeting him would require a referral. I cold emailed him rather than in search of a referral with an intro about our team, the product and requested if we could meet in Bangalore which is closer to our city, Chennai. I use a small trick when mailing individuals who get plenty of emails. I examine their Facebook and twitter profiles for updates and mail virtually at the simila r time they tweet or share (used Tweetdeck for notification of updates). He replied asking about our product, but then went radio silent. Followed up by way of e-mail within the next couple of days but there was no response. Later on, his tweets revealed that he was meeting a lot of entrepreneurs in Mumbai and Delhi. His tweets revealed he reached Bangalore on the evening of August twenty eighth. On Aug 29th round 7:50AM, Paul tweeted a picture from a high rise constructing. I assumed it needed to be a hotel at this time of the day. We narrowed down on the placement of the tweet and found solely a few good motels close by. We finally guessed it needed to be the Royal Orchid Hotel. We had to do one thing spectacular and we weren’t about to surrender the chance to meet him when he was in our neck of the woods! We decided to make small custom-made printed books for each of the five hundred Startups partners, which contained our pitch deck. I went through the Facebook & Twitter profile s of all the five hundred partners and did my greatest to decipher their favourite picture poses, colours, clothes style, and so on. We then fed all this info of the partners to Andrew, a pal who drew caricatures. Those became the cover of the e-book, and we additionally got the pitch guide done by our designer Isaac and got posters printed of each caricature. We received all these books and posters accomplished by night. We noticed from his tweets, Paul was staying for a max of forty eight hours in each metropolis,so we needed to rush. The quickest and cheapest way to get to Bangalore is by bus. So we slept on a bus eight hours in a single day to Bangalore. That night, I seen an Instagram picture posted by Mukund Mohan, CEO of India Microsoft Accelerator with Paul in his office. Fortunately we had a meeting with Mukund the subsequent day. When we met up with him, he confirmed that Paul’s resort was indeed the Royal Orchid, but that Paul would be leaving the town soon. So we hopped into a cab to the resort, tweeted out to Paul on the way saying we were hanging around the hotel, and would love to fulfill him. (Again, no response) We reached the lodge foyer at 11am in anticipation. We decided to provide a call to Paul’s phone (I received his quantity from his email signature and from Mukund). No reply. So we left a voicemail saying were ready in the hotel lobby and would love to satisfy him. Another hour passed. I went over to the reception desk to investigate if Paul had checked out. Before I might ask, lo and behold â€" Paul Singh comes out of the elevator. I hovered around, waiting for him to check out of the lodge. Then I instantly jumped in his method and launched myself. I was too excited to fulfill him! Instead of providing my hand for a handshake, I immediately thrust our pitch deck e-book into his arms. At first, this seemed like a horrible thought. Paul took one look at the first e-book, saw a cartoon of himself on it, and instantly freaked out, ask ing “Who the f**k are you guys and what would you like???” I thought I had blown it. But I kept the dialog going, explaining how we tracked him down and began to pitch him proper there in the lobby. Unfortunately, the dialog got cut short as a result of he had to run to a meeting. Paul asked if we could wait until 2 pm and said he would love to speak to us before he left to the airport. We stated yes since we had come all the way just to satisfy him. We waited till 3pm, Paul sent us a tweet as he received struck in traffic and possibly had to rush to the airport when he obtained again to the lodge. We were quite certain Paul was touring alone from his tweets and in addition when he checked out alone out of the resort. So we determined to ask Paul if we could pitch him in the cab as there must be house for each of us and obtained every thing able to pitch on my laptop. Eventually, Paul came again, apologized for being late, and warranted he’d give us a call once he was again in the US. I said “Paul, if we don’t freak you out again, can we be a part of you on the cab ride to the airport and pitch you on the way?” He stated “yes”. We obtained into the cab and pitched him on the best way to the airport. After listening to us, Paul started pitching 500 Startups to us and how they might help us! We bid adieu, and then three weeks later we obtained an e mail from Paul with a suggestion to join the Fall 2012 Accelerator program! Pitched in a cab on the way to the airport by @kwdinc & @ramakanth_d /cc@davemcclure @christine_tsai @christenobrien pic.twitter.com/svhqjwLS â€" @paulsingh We’ve had the possibility to be part of the Batch startups Accelerator program, working alongside some of the best entrepreneurs and mentors from around the globe. Biggest takeaway from our journey of hustling into 500? If you’re persistent, you’ll always discover a way to get what you want â€" so long as you by no means give up.We’re glad we didn’t. Hustled exhaus ting! Sometimes you have to do no matter it takes to win, to get what you need, to get noticed and what you actually deserve! Jim Rohn puts it greatest “When you understand what you want, and need it bad sufficient, you will find a approach to get it”. If you actually need to do one thing, you will discover a means; when you don’t, you can see an excuse. Enter your email handle:

How to recharge at the airport while traveling solo

Step by step instructions to revive at the air terminal while voyaging solo Step by step instructions to revive at the air terminal while voyaging solo Regardless of whether it's for work or excursion or to see family during the special seasons, the greater part of us are going to end up voyaging alone sooner or later in our lives. If the thought seems like a total bad dream to you, you're certainly not the only one. Long queues, traversing security, and holding up through numerous deferrals at your door is awful enough when you have a mate to help get you through. Alone, it can turn out to be considerably more nerve-wracking. Be that as it may, voyaging alone need not be such an irritation. At last, we have a decision: We can allow the air terminal to win and totally channel us of our life power, or we can adjust and change the commonly trying experience into personal time. Below are a couple of tips on the most proficient method to do just that.1. Consider more than the goal when you packIt's anything but difficult to get so got up to speed in ensuring we have what we requirement for the goal that we neglect what we requirement for the excursion. Along these lines, when you've got done with getting pressed, pause for a minute to think about all the manners in which you get awkward when you're hanging tight for your plane. By and by, my knees get terribly achey, it generally is by all accounts freezing, and I get hangry yet couldn't care less to drop a huge amount of cash on lunch. Fixes? An explode footstool, conservative wool cover, some chamomile tea (high temp water is normally free), and a natively constructed avocado and cucumber sandwich. It's simply enough stuff to keep me feeling comfortable without me stashing everything when I get set up.It's additionally ideal to incorporate one thing that doesn't really tackle an issue however fulfills you. For me, it could be anything from a movement container of the new hand cream I'm infatuated with to a knickknack my late grandma got me. On the off chance that it sets me feeling great and is effortlessly stowed, into my pack it goes.2. Download a contemplation appTaking a second to energize during the 'pick up the pace and pause' game can be a finished lifesaver. You don't need to be an anxious flier to discover air terminals extremely distressing - much after you've cleared your path through security. Regardless of whether you're somebody who contemplates, pausing for a minute to revive during the pick up the pace and pause game can be a finished lifeline. In case you're new to the training or figure it may be too hard to even consider finding your inside in such a bustling spot, I was unable to suggest a reflection application enough. There are some truly astonishing alternatives out there that can without much of a stretch assist you with unwinding and locate your quiet before you head off to get onto your flight.3. Exploit all that time with a leave-on maskI don't think about you, yet I'm somewhat of a wild sleeper - so a short-term face cover is normally off limits for me. Where it can show up, notwithstanding, is on a long trip.Befo re you go to attempt this yourself, I would propose you keep a couple of straightforward guidelines. In the first place, ensure you've cleaned your hands completely. I don't think I have to reveal to you exactly how net an air terminal can be with regards to microorganisms, however you unquestionably would prefer not to move any of it to your face. Next, wipe your face with a dispensable facial material (or towel hosed with micellar water on the off chance that you don't do the expendable thing) to evacuate any pollutions. At last, pick a cover that assimilates into the skin and doesn't require clearing off. You're hoping to unwind, not give yourself an errand after you land. Now, when your flight's completely completed, you can step off the plane looking quite dewy rather than dry and depleted. (Simply remember to remain hydrated!)4. Get an interest or skillIt probably won't appear it from the outset, however an air terminal is really an entirely decent spot to show yourself somethi ng. You're in a circumstance where you're for the most part simply sitting and pausing, and there won't be much around to divert you - particularly during the excursion itself. Concerning what to realize, it's completely up to you. There are huge amounts of applications and recordings out there that will show you something for nothing, so you shouldn't experience any difficulty whatsoever finding a subject that intrigues you. Furthermore, don't feel like you need to restrict yourself to simply the computerized! Simply make a point to pick something attainable. Insofar as it doesn't require a huge amount of gear, the sky's the cutoff. (Fun certainty: I really instructed myself to weave while trusting that my closest companion will give birth.)5. Do some close to home housekeepingWhether it's sorting out your photographs or thinking of a 5-year plan, we as a whole have those ventures we can never entirely discover an opportunity to get around to. Much the same as with discovering some new information, sticking around at the air terminal may be the ideal opportunity to lock in and do it. Regardless of whether you know it is extremely unlikely you will have the option to complete, it'll despite everything be definitely justified even despite a shot. Particularly with longer activities, beginning can be the hardest part. In this way, regardless of where you are all the while, there's an excellent possibility you're going to feel a lot lighter than if you hadn't began working on it at all.Originally from Illinois, Sarah Militello is a Los Angeles-based independent essayist and originator of ladies' way of life and travel site Milk Flowers. This article was initially posted on Shondaland.com.

Leadership development at the Growth Edge

Leadership development at the Growth Edge As a coach, I regularly work with a coach myself for personal and professional development. We are currently working on a specific area of executive development for me. As we were talking about that specific area last week, I had the aha moment when I realized the past behaviors I utilized in this specific area are no longer serving me. I would argue that they didn’t really serve me to begin with. However, I have yet to define the behaviors that will replace it. That can be an overwhelming and scary feeling. When I mentioned this to my coach she said, “you are at the growth edge.” That phrase and image rang so clearly for me. It felt like I was at the edge and the only way down was scary. I couldn’t see the possibilities of navigating that edge. That visual reminded me of a vacation I took with my family years ago to Costa Rica. We went zip-lining in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. You literally zip-lined through clouds. When the person ahead of you started the zip line, they disappeared into the clouds. You didn’t know what was going to happen on the other side. You had to have faith (and strong safety guidelines) that what was on the other side of that cloud was worth it. It was. The view was amazing. The experience was amazing. So here I sit on my growth edge. Excited about what’s next in my leadership journey. Scared about how I am going to get there. My coach and I have tools we are working through to ease the fear, to learn, to observe, to learn some more and then to take action on new behaviors.

How to Apologize for Any Mistake at Work -The Muse

The most effective method to Apologize for Any Mistake at Work - The Muse The most effective method to Apologize for Any Mistake at Work Regardless of where you work or what you do, you're in the long run must apologize to somebody for something. That is an unavoidable truth. In a working environment loaded up with people, you will perpetually run into an assortment of circumstances where emotions get injured. As it's not so much plausible or develop to adopt a duck-and-spread strategy when things get warmed at the workplace, you should be furnished with the correct words to thoughtfully address not exactly agreeable circumstances. All together for a conciliatory sentiment to be powerful, it should be done well. Specialists concur that the best ones incorporate affirmation and comprehension of what occurred and the harm done. You ought to likewise perceive your job, assume liability for it, and convey lament. What you ought to overlook are any defenses and the words if or yet. So, I'm grieved in the event that I hurt your sentiments during the gathering, or I'm sorry we made a mistake however you realized we were short-staffed isn't making up any ground. Since you know the nuts and bolts, here are contents for the most widely recognized work environment expressions of remorse: 1. You Made a Mistake That You Can't Fix Yourself You're human, so you spoiled on something complex (think: green-lighting something you didn't really have the power to OK). You understand that you don't have what it takes to fix it all alone, and the main choice you have is to concede this to your chief and request that her make a few things happen and help you out. This expression of remorse ought to be opportune (since you need assistance fixing the blunder quick), and open to tolerating obligation. What's more, it ought to incorporate an affirmation that it won't occur once more. Attempt I committed an error on the 'B' Case. I thought I was stepping up to the plate, however I can see since I ought to have shown my activities to you first. I'm so heartbroken and it won't occur once more. Nonetheless, so as to fix it, I'll need your assistance. When's the best time for us to talk about? 2. You Promised Something Impossible to a Client You're continually endeavoring to surpass your customers' desires. You go well beyond, promising to give them everything their hearts want. This functions admirably until you understand that something you promised them essentially is impossible. In case you're a piece of a group regardless of whether you've been running lead-share your slip-up with your associates or your chief. They will be unable to support you, however in any event, they should recognize what's happening. At that point, come arranged with an answer for when you break the news. In case you're going to tell a customer you can't accomplish something, you need to be set up to share what you can do. Go With Lamentably, I can't give you [what I guaranteed you]. I'm upset for my oversight. I said yes out of energy and a craving to give you precisely what you needed, however I ought to have checked with our assets/financial plan/transfer speed before saying it should be possible. This is what I can offer you... 3. You Offended Someone You and your collaborator were having a discussion about something, it got warmed, and you said something that affronted her. You likely didn't mean it-or perhaps you did-yet now you understand so as to keep the harmony at the workplace, you have to streamline things. Try not to concentrate on what made you stand up (see support, above), simply center around the way that you really lament saying it. Start Here I understand that what I said before was hostile. I wasn't right to address you like that, it was amateurish, and I am really heartbroken. I will take a shot at keeping my cool in tense circumstances. Note: The above expression of remorse works on the off chance that you told somebody you figure his motto will be as mainstream as New Coke. It doesn't have any significant bearing on the off chance that you said something supremacist, misogynist, extremist the rundown continues endlessly, yet I realize you realize that sort of conduct can't be fixed with a conciliatory sentiment layout. 4. You're the Bearer of Bad News Nobody needs to convey terrible news. It very well may be particularly baffling when it's something that is totally out of your control, or the consequence of a troublesome call. Be that as it may, in case you're in an administration position, this will happen-a great deal. I see this kind of conciliatory sentiment as somewhat trickier than the others since it's not something you are 100% liable for. Be that as it may, the best activity is to arrive at the point rapidly, to limit the torment exacted on those getting the (not exactly attractive) update. Check This Notwithstanding my earnest attempts, I'm sorry to reveal to you that your advancement/raise/excursion/venture was denied. The explanation was a direct result of spending cuts/staffing/current needs. Kindly don't let this dishearten you. We really esteem your commitment to the group and will attempt to figure out how to show you exactly how much. 5. You Forgot a Task For reasons unknown, you totally blanked on completing a venture by the cutoff time. To exacerbate the situation, your manager discovered before you got an opportunity to scramble and complete it. He is disturbed! Along these lines, it's significant that your conciliatory sentiment shows you're not rationalizing and you're giving a solid time to when you will be done. Recognize the cold hard reality With I'm upset for missing the cutoff time on Project X. I understand that my mistake thinks about inadequately the group. I can finish my segment of the work before the day's over tomorrow. Will that be OK, or might you want to perceive what I have in draft structure? Saying 'sorry' is all around terrible, however it's frequently essential so as to manufacture, fix, and fortify connections in the work environment. In this way, be legitimate, genuine, and examine what you may do any other way whenever, in light of the fact that a decent statement of regret can go far.

The Rochester Job Search Presentations

The Rochester Job Search Presentations My cousins grew up in Greece, right outside of Rochester. I knew practically nothing about the place, except that it was cold for about 10 months out of the year (not sure how true that is). Last week I shared five presentations in the Rochester area.  I was amazed and impressed with how beautiful and fun this area is. There are strong initiatives to help Rochester get to work.  Its a vibrant area that was the home of Kodak and Xerox, and other companies.  Lake Ontario is there, and there are amazing, beautiful rivers and lots of forest and hill areas.  The waterfall in the city was awesome. My driver, Greg Taylor (Sir LinkedALot) gave me a two day tour of the city and surrounding areas, and introduced me to eating at Wegmans (wow!). Driving around with Greg was a treat since he grew up there, and knew a lot of the history of the town. I also met some really cool people. Whats left on the tour?  St. Louis on Tuesday, and Kansas City on Thursday.  And lots and lots of driving  It took three weeks to get to the D.C. area, and it will take less than a week to drive back to Utah. The Rochester Job Search Presentations My cousins grew up in Greece, right outside of Rochester. Choosing the Best Font For a Resume

Choosing the Best Font For a ResumeHow to choose the best font for a resume can be a difficult task, but it doesn't have to be if you follow a few simple rules. Choosing the best font for a resume is a big deal and you should make sure that you get the best font possible for your resume. The first thing you should do is to determine what font you want to use on your resume. If you're just putting together a resume for someone else, go ahead and pick the best font for a resume for the most formal settings. If you're doing this yourself, you'll probably want something more informal. This should really depend on the kind of career you have.Typeface is a very important part of designing a resume. The font is what stands out. It's how you introduce yourself, your job experience, and what you're hoping to get out of a potential employer when they look at your resume. Most people like bold fonts for resumes because they stand out from the rest of the background. This is the same reason that d ark, eye-catching fonts make their way into titles.Don't rely on fancy fonts that aren't designed for this purpose. You will quickly become frustrated with the fonts that are more expensive and show up as something you know isn't a real font.If you've found an original font that you like, do not choose it for your resume. There is no need to take the time to go back and change fonts once it has been printed. What's more, the font you chose could be more expensive than other fonts that are on the market.Typefaces used in resumes are usually bold or italic fonts, although sometimes it's a good idea to use just one typeface for the body of the document. In this case, keep in mind that it would be nice to have a great font that is a little more of a graphic style so that it stands out. On the other hand, having a plain color on the page can be less dramatic.Choosing the best font for a resume is a decision that must be made by the person who is creating the resume. It's an important dec ision and you'll want to choose a font that is going to get attention.

A Beginners Guide to Applying for a New Credit Card Online

A Beginners Guide to Applying for a New Credit Card Online Credit cards are useful if you have businesses or household to run. Large expenses can easily wipe out your savings account or liquid assets, and can happen without warning. With the aid of a credit card, you can pay for those unexpected expenses without exhausting your cash on hand. The following information is a useful guide for credit card users. It includes advice on basics such as fees, interest rates, and responsible credit card use. Credit Rating In order to apply for a credit card, one must have some level of credit rating. First-time card owners often receive offers in their email for cards with high interest rates and low credit limits because they do not yet have an established credit rating. Accepting these cards and using them sparingly can help build a good credit rating. Eventually, how you manage your account allows you to apply for other major credit cards with lower interest rates and higher credit limit. This takes time, diligence, and consistency when paying off charge card balances. Once you establish a good credit rating, the less beneficial card accounts should be paid off and closed. Another way to build up your credit rating is the use of store credit cards. Qualifying for retail charge accounts is easier; making small purchases and paying the balance on time helps build the credit rating needed to apply for major credit cards. Credit Card Fees Credit card users should be aware of the fees associated with each account. Fees vary greatly from company to company, so it is the user’s responsibility to research the fine print on fees. Some interest rates are low enough to counter any fees incurred, but one must be aware of all the terms and conditions. Avoid being taken advantage of by hidden fees. There are extra charges when using your card at an ATM machine, for being late on a payment, or for paying your bill beyond a certain time period. You can even incur fees for not using the card at all. Know how your online credit card works. Credit cards, when managed properly, can significantly increase your buying power whether used at home or for business. They can also become your downfall. Credit card debt mounts quickly because of how easy they are to use in almost any scenario. Dining out, buying books for school, paying for fuel, furnishing a home, you can even buy groceries with credit cards. Paying with a credit card is so convenient because there was no cash involved. This false sense of security can lead to reckless spending, leaving the buyer with more monthly payments than they can afford. Credit card companies compete for your business. It is important to know your options when choosing one. When applying online for a credit card, you must take the time to know the fees, rewards, and interest rates before you commit to a binding agreement with any lending service. Diversity and Inclusion in Business - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Diversity and Inclusion in Business - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career There’s something just a little bit … off about the way we talk about diversity. We discuss it with longing, like it’s a rainbow or a unicorn â€" or something seen only in just the right conditions. Once we witness it, we silently pray it sticks around a while. The truth is, diversity doesn’t happen unless we want it to. That means it starts with a conscious decision. The diversity conversation is happening all around the country right now â€" even as we speak. Let’s raise a few more voices. Why Does Diversity Matter? This should be said as plainly as possible: Encouraging diversity is simply the right thing to do. Sure, ethical behavior is not always the most convenient or the most expedient way to do business in the modern world, but it does make us better people. The most interesting part of this conversation, though, is the fact that embracing diversity in the workplace is not just a “nice” idea â€" it also has all kinds of positive implications for the success of your business. Consider PWC’s recent 18th Annual Global CEO Survey, which found that of the leaders surveyed whose companies had implemented some kind of diversity or inclusiveness program, 85% of them reported improved profitability. That’s a big deal! They’re hardly alone in witnessing this phenomenon, too. The Center for Talent Innovation reported similar results â€" companies that actively embrace diversity enjoy a “competitive edge” and improved access to new markets. It would appear that diversity is a kind of secret sauce in the business world. It’s a little difficult to quantify, perhaps, but it’s observable. And why shouldn’t it be? In the year 2016, imagine yourself walking into a company’s atrium to find nothing but pasty white millennials walking around. Companies like these are becoming more and more conspicuous. Imagine visiting a similar company with a rich cultural tapestry â€" folks from all walks of life, sharing their expertise and experience and working toward a common goal. It should go without saying which of these two companies would leave the better first impression. Diversity is not just about skin pigmentation, either. It says something about that company’s culture and their worldliness. It’s true that a diverse company will continue to attract diversity â€" it’s a self-fulfilling prophesy. It has to start somewhere, however, and in this case, that somewhere is a deliberate decision by management to hire more inclusively. In a recent survey, 65% of large company executives had committed themselves to building a diverse workplace. Are you a part of this growing majority? What Can You Do About It? Phrases like “affirmative action” tend to ruffle feathers whenever they come up. After all, the best man or woman should get the job, right? Regardless of their other physical traits? Well â€" sure. The problem is, though, we don’t quite live in a world where affirmative action â€" or something like it â€" isn’t wholly unnecessary. There really is something to be said for deliberately hiring a variety of people with different cultures, worldviews and perspectives. As we learned above, this kind of cultural richness will only improve your company’s performance and bottom line. You never know where the next great idea will come from, so why not cast the widest net you possibly can? Of course, this is only half of the equation. The more important part of the business world’s job where diversity is concerned is to make sure the decision-making process is a little more diffuse than it tends to be. In other words, the era of cloistered management reining from boardrooms is on its way out. Some folks call this “ivory tower management,” and it’s been a big problem. Celebrating diversity properly is not just about herding people with different skin pigmentation into the same room â€" it’s about celebrating diversity of thought as well. Management should rely on the perspectives of employees on each rung of the company ladder. Crowd source big decisions. Ask individual teams within the company â€" these are diverse microcosms all their own â€" to come together to forge their own values and goals. Democratize the inner workings of the company. In practical terms, there are a few things the modern company can do to work more actively toward creating a more diverse workplace. One thing is to become involved with movements and organizations like HeForShe, which is a United Nations initiative that promotes gender equality all around the world. Pledging your support to a movement like this one would rightly be seen as a badge of honor. You can also lend your voice publicly to political battles, such as pay equity for women. There’s no reason this should be a contentious issue in the year 2016, and it’s likely that with just a little more organized support from business leaders, we can finally have closure on the gender-based wage gap. It Starts With a Decision As we’ve hopefully demonstrated here, diversity is not a thing that just happens. It must begin with decisions â€" baby steps made in the name of progress â€" and these decisions are made by people just like you.

Making Networking and Informational Interviews Part of your Job Search - CareerAlley

Making Networking and Informational Interviews Part of your Job Search - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Theres a 90% chance your next job will come through networking, even more so if relocation isnt part of your job searching plan. Nationally, 80% of all jobs are found in the hidden job market. You find the hidden job market through networking. The hidden job market is composed of the positions that open in organizations that are never advertised and are usually filled via word-of-mouth. If people do not know that you are out of work, available, and qualified for these positions, word-of-mouth jobs will never find you. Yes, it takes courage to tell people that you are out of work, and even more courage to reach out to others to meet them and learn from them. However, if you sit at home in front of a computer every day the hidden jobs will stay hidden. I always advise people to automate their Internet job search using a job aggregator like simplyhired.com or indeed.com and let the jobs flow to them each day via email. Create a customized profile with very specific keywords to limit the amount of positions that are found so that they are relevant to your specific talents and the kinds of positions youre looking for. Then, unsubscribe from any other websites that may be sending job alerts, because the aggregator will pick those positions up too. Streamlining the online job search leaves you the free time to seek out effective, in-person networking opportunities. Understand that networking is not easy at first, but it does get better as you learn the process. [easyazon_link asin=1499343647 locale=US new_window=default nofollow=default tag=caree07-20 add_to_cart=default cloaking=default localization=default popups=default]Informational interviews[/easyazon_link]are meetings that you set up with people that you want to meet and learn from, lasting about twenty minutes to half an hour. They can help you as you are researching a company you might want to work for, or help you understand some of the skills you want to update or acquire as you continue your job search. To make the most of these interviews, think about questions like: How did you get involved in this career? What do you like best, and least about the work you do? What are some of the jobs youve had before this one? What can you tell me about the state of this industry now? What are some of the training and skills you learned to do this job? One of the most important questions you can ask in an effective informational interview is the final question you ask: Would you be able to refer me to any other people that I should be having this conversation with? If the answer is yes, and they provide the contacts, its been a great meeting. But remember, after the informational interview or any interview, youre not done networking: make sure you send a thank-you note within a few days of your meeting. Cousins Maine Lobster How the Food Truck Earns Millions

Cousins Maine Lobster How the Food Truck Earns Millions Anyone who says you can’t turn your food passion into big money hasn’t met Sabin Lomac and Jim Tselikis. Raised in Maine, the two cousins channeled their love of the state’s local lobster into Cousins Maine Lobster, a food truck they started in Los Angeles that has since blown up across the United States and beyondâ€"and is now earning them eight-figure revenue. It wasn’t quite as simple as it may seem, though. Lomac, 37, and Tselikis, 33, put up quite a bit of their own money and risked a lot to make their dreams happen. They also had to learn a lot along the way, as they detail in their new book Cousins Maine Lobster: How One Food Truck Became a Multi-Million Dollar Business. We talked to them about how they made big bucks off lobster and the hardest lessons of being an entrepreneur. courtesy of Cousins Maine Lobster An Intoxicating Idea Cousins Maine Lobster started with modest ambitions. In 2011, Tselikis visited Lomac in Los Angeles. One night during an alcohol-fueled sushi dinner on Sunset Boulevard, they bonded over their shared fondness for the food they grew up with together in Maine. “The point that resonated was our loyalty, love, and devotion to our family, and the one thing that was always there for the family times was the lobster,” Tselikis says. “We’re like, ‘Why don’t we bring this lobster out to LA?’ … The best ideas come when you’re intoxicated.” So they sketched out a business plan. They decided on a food truck, a growing business in the area at the time, and each invested $20,000 of their own money. Both had saved substantially from their regular jobsâ€"Tselikis was in management while Lomac worked in real estateâ€"and had faith in their idea. Over the next year, they worked with Maine lobster purveyors to get the sustainable shellfish out to California. The original truck was delivered to them late, and employees lacked proper training. But the upside became clear as soon as customers were eating. “There were 80 people in line raving about the product,” Tselikis says. According to figures provided by Cousins Maine, that truck earned $890,824 in gross sales during 2012, its first year. Five years later, the company brought in more $20 million in 2017. “In hindsight, we realized how beautiful and special [Maine lobster] was,” Lomac says of the concept. “You could only get it [around LA] at fine-dining restaurants for $80 dollars as surf and turf.” In the early days, Cousins Maine Lobster sold mostly lobster rolls, but it now turns out many fast-casual twists on the crustacean, including tater tots served with pico de gallo and a cilantro lime sauce, which is doing “gangbusters,” according to Lomac. They were also helped by an infusion of cash thanks to an appearance on Shark Tank and an investment from longtime Shark Barbara Corcoran. That belief in Maine lobster has taken the cousins far outside of LA. In addition to multiple food trucks and a restaurant in the city, Lomac and Tselikis have franchised their business, which includes locations in North Carolina, Texas, and even Taiwan. They have more standalone restaurants in the works. Cousins Maine Lobster courtesy of Cousins Maine Lobster The Franchise Life Cousins Maine Lobster expanded gradually at first, with additional trucks in the LA area. A steady stream of loyal fans kept things going. But it wasn’t until 2015, when the business franchised, that sales suddenly ballooned, going from $2.6 million the year before to more than $11 million. That huge jump is thanks to the success of periphery trucks launched across the country that year. But while it was the clearest route to making more money, that pivot wasn’t without difficulties. “We had to grasp what we were doing. It takes so long to really truly understand how to manage [a franchise operation],” Tselikis says. “How do you protect your brand and hold up your reputation?” The cousins carefully vetted franchisees and trained them in order to ensure that their product, which is shipped already cooked from Maine before being prepared in dishes at a truck or restaurant, would meet their standards wherever it went. “One thing we learned about growing a business is that none of this stuff is overnight success. It’s not a quick cash grab,” Tselikis adds. courtesy of Cousins Maine Lobster Don’t be afraid to ‘look stupid’ The biggest hurdle in launching Cousins Maine, according to Lomac, was a psychological one. “You have to be fearless. You have to believe in what you’re doing, trust your gut, and kinda go against the grain,” he says. “Society teaches us we need to have stable jobs and follow a certain path. You shouldn’t open a food truckâ€"it makes no sense on paper.” That’s why, he says, “we didn’t tell anyone about our idea [initially]. We didn’t want someone to talk us out of it.” He’s learned that a certain amount of daring is necessary. “The only time our business has not gone up in trajectory is when we were cautious or timid.” But they also try not to let the better years get to their heads. “We were very cognizant to have humility. We never have an ego. We’re going to ask a million questions,” Tselikis adds. That has included seeking out his accountant dad for invaluable financial help when they were out of their depth. “Don’t be afraid to sound or look stupid.” We’ve included affiliate links in this article.
